Politician, European Patriot, Entrepreneur, Founder, Feminist

Silvana is the Founder of the Women in Parliaments a Global Forum (WIP), the worldwide network of female Politicians. WIP is an independent, non-partisan and not-for-profit foundation. Its mission is to advance society by increasing the number and influence of women in political leadership.

Silvana has been a Member of the European Parliament 2004-2014. From 2009 to 2011 she was Vice-President (Deputy Speaker) of the European Parliament, and from 2004 to 2009 she was First Vice-President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. She served in the committees on budget, on trade and on gender equality. Before her time in politics she founded and ran a public affairs consultancy in Brussels, which later merged with a larger US firm. She was also active as a talk-show host with her own show on two regional German TV channels, and is a contributor to national and international media. Silvana holds numerous honorary positions, including Representative of the EU to W20, an engagement group of G20, Alumni of the Young Global Leaders Network of the World Economic Forum. In addition to her voluntary work for WIP, Silvana act as Senior Advisor to EY Ernst & Young, as Senior Policy Advisor to gplus europe, and provides guidance on EU regulatory issues to a range of companies and governments. She is a regular speaker at institutions such as the UN, OECD, World Bank and other international fora.

With her three kids and their Irish father she lives in Brussels, Belgium.


 

Member of the European Parliament

 

During her time in the European Parliament she has held numerous positions, including

– Vice-President/Deputy Speaker of the Parliament (2009 – 2011):

  • Vice-President responsible for STOA (Science and Technology Options Assessment Unit of the European Parliament)
  • Bureau Member of Working Party on Information and Communication Policy
  • Chair High Level Group on Gender Equality and Diversity
  • Co-Chair Steering Group National Parliaments

– Vice-Chair of the ALDE Group (2004 – 2009):

  • Chairing of ALDE Group Meetings
  • Chair of the ALDE Committee of Coordinators (Coordinators are the Group’s spokespeople for all different policy areas)
  • Transition management of the ELDR Group of 50 Members in 1999-2004 to the 88 Member strong ALDE Group after 2004
  • Establishment of rules of procedure / statute for the ALDE Group
  • Enlargement of the ALDE Group secretariat according to its new size

Political Activities

 

Silvana has been politically active since the early 1990’s:

In 2004 and 2009, Silvana was top of the list for nationwide elections to the European Parliament. In 2004, the FDP won their best ever result in European elections (6.2%) after 10 years of absence as a result of a failure to overcome the 5% threshold. In 2009, there was a further increase by 80% (11.6%). FDP is now the biggest national group along with the British Liberal Democrats in the ALDE Group.
