On Wednesday 27 June the ALDE Group, on the initiative of Silvana Koch-Mehrin, organised a seminar on the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) which is currently being negotiated between the EU and Canada. It is the second of the ‘new generation’ trade agreements after the EU-Korea FTA in 2011, which the EU is likely to conclude in the second half of 2012.
The seminar brought together some of the main political stakeholders and business representatives affected by CETA, to discuss the benefits and challenges of closer trade relations between the two trade partners. Representatives of the European agriculture and pharmaceutical sectors as well as Canada’s main trading companies were present to discuss the possible opportunities and shortcomings of the agreement. Furthermore, insiders to the ongoing negotiations presented a state of play and the sectors in which conflictual issues still remain to be solved.
The seminar was moderated by Shirin Wheeler, BBC Host of ‘The Record Europe’. A picture gallery can be found here.
