ALDE Seminar: “The EU’s Fuel Quality Directive – What Effects on Trade and Geopolitics?”

On 5 March, Silvana Koch-Mehrin hosted together with her colleague Jens Rohde a seminar in order to discuss the impact of the EU’s Fuel Quality Directive on the EU’s trade relations, the competitiveness of the EU economy, the EU’s energy security, and the wider geopolitical implications.

Silvana Koch-Mehrin commented: “The seminar showed that many questions about the WTO compatibility and the trade impact of the proposed implementing measures for the Fuel Quality Directive have not been considered sufficiently by DG Clima. If the Commission goes forward with this proposal as it stands today, the Commission should be ready to face WTO challenges, with a high likelyness of defeat.”

Speakers participating included:

  • Connie Hedegaard, EU-Commissioner for Climate Action
  • Jeffrey G. Sundquist, Alberta Special Envoy to the UK and the EU
  • Dr. Hans-Joachim Prieß, Partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer
  • Cécile Maisonneuve, Director at Center for Energy, IFRI
  • Baudouin Kelecom, Chairman of Automotive Fuels Action Group, Europia
