Statement by Silvana Koch-Mehrin, shadow rapporteur for the ALDE in the FEMM Committee on the decision by the committees on Legal Affairs (JURI) and on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) to back the proposal by the European Commission for a directive on improving the gender balance among non-executive directors of companies listed on stock exchanges:
“Happy day for Europe: the Legal Affairs and the Women’s Rights committees of the European Parliament adopted the legislation on gender quotas for the boardroom with 40 yes to 9 no votes. Really a strong signal! By 2020 (2018 for public companies) all stock exchange listed big companies in the EU are obliged to have 40% of the less represented gender – today that’s women – in the board. This increase in talent and diversity will be good for European competitiveness and create growth. Next step plenary vote in November, and then taking it up with the EU-Governments!”
